Bath Elementary Bond Issue FAQ

 Question and Answer

How much will this levy cost me?

Answer:  The owner of a $100,000.00 (market value) home would pay $163.54 per year, or $13.63/month, or $3.15/week.

Did the Board consider renovation instead of a new building?

Answer:  The Board researched the cost of renovation and it is estimated to be more than 80% of the cost of new construction.  Even after renovation, the structure of the building would still be old and aging. Due to the existing building’s configuration we would still face severe limitations such as cafeteria & kitchen sizes, parking and vehicular circulation, handicapped accessibility, gym size, building security, flat roofs and classes still being held in the bus garage. Under our current facilities plan approved by OSFC, we get credit toward our total plan cost for new construction and not for renovation.  The credit would be applied when we need to address facilities for grades 6-12 in the future and would result in state funding for a large portion of that work.

Did the Board consider postponing the bond issue to a future time?

Answer:  After considerable discussion the Board has determined that the elementary building is at the stage in its life where replacement is necessary. The need is here today.  The opportunity to meet this need and qualify for State of Ohio funding and reimbursement is here today as well. If passed in March, the cost of the project does not increase from last spring, and the cost to taxpayers actually went down from last spring due to valuation changes.  We believe that the cost of the project will only rise in the future, and we have no guarantees concerning future district valuation levels.

Did the Board consider the impact on education and students?

Answer: The Board considered the research and experience from other districts which proves the benefits of new facilities for both students and teachers alike. Some of those improvements include student performance, student attentiveness, test scores, attendance, teacher retention, staff utilization, and faculty & student collaboration.  Research has also proven that property values are positively impacted in school districts after new school facilities are completed. A new building will provide larger room sizes, more efficient heating, air conditioning on warm days, better, more efficient lighting, and the latest technology in classrooms. Today’s curriculum demands an appropriate educational environment and access to the best technology and teaching methods available.  School districts with new buildings, both regionally and state-wide, have experienced these benefits.

What is the cost of the elementary building project?

Answer:  25 Million Dollars

When is Election Day?

Answer:  March 6, 2012
